Talk with Bonnie Ora Sherk – 12 October 2017
2017-10-12 @ 18:00 - 19:00
Bonnie Ora Sherk, NYC and San Francisco-based artist, landscape architect, educator, and author will be giving a public talk and workshop on A Living Library, a local and planetary genre for making place-based, ecological transformation in communities and schools that showcases integrated linked systems – biological, cultural, technological. The public is invited to attend and participate, involving their local community to join with the theme “Invite your neighbor”. A goal is to introduce the concept of A Living Library to Zurich residents and public agencies, to result in development of a unique Zurich Branch Living Library & Think Park in the area over time with diverse sectors of the community.
A Living Library or A.L.L. for short, links local resources: human, ecological, economic, historic, technological, aesthetic – seen through time – past, present, future. Once understood, these assets then are incorporated to make a resilient and sustainable plan for the future that integrates resources such as school, parks, streets, public housing, and other open spaces to address and help solve local issues and opportunities, and address issues such as climate change, flood mitigation, community and school education, green skills job training, environmental justice, contemporary issues of art, and other related issues.
All sectors of the community are involved in developing A Living Library and work together to make a relevant plan for the future that is sensitive to, and pertains to the local community, resources, and issues. Students and others are involved in multiple processes: research, planning, design, implementation, use, maintenance, management, and communications.A goal of Life Frames, Inc., the non-profit sponsor of A Living Library, founded and directed by Bonnie Ora Sherk, is to develop unique, place-based, Branch Living Library & Think Parks – locally and globally – to be linked through sculptural, multi-functional, Green-Powered Digital Gateways, that will bring underground water forth as needed, showcase local resources and processes through display technologies, and allow for live interactive broadcast between Branch Living Library & Think Parks in diverse parts of the world, helping us to understand and appreciate the commonalities and diversities of cultures and ecologies – near and far.
Bonnie Ora is an artist, landscape designer and educator based in San Francisco and New York City. Her artistic praxis entails issues of community, sustainability, and ecology since the early 70’s, making of her a radical pioneer of performing art.Her work has been exhibited, among others, at SFMOMA, SFAI, Los Angeles Institute of Contemporary Arts, ICA in London, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein and Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin, Museu d’Art Contemporani in Barcelona, MAK in Vienna, Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, MOCA in Los Angeles, Van Abbe Museum in Eindhoven, MoMA PS1 in New York, Parco Arte Vivente in Turin, and at the 57th Venice Biennale.
